The fifth grade traveled into the city on Wednesday to visit the Museum of Modern Art and the Central Park Zoo. The trip, which included transportation on the Hampton Jitney, was funded by the Visiting Artists Program and by a donation from The Art Barge in Amagansett. The trip was organized by art teachers Sherry Williams and Colleen McGowan. Students have been learning about artist Henri Matisse and the MoMA is currently displaying his artwork in their "Cutouts" exhibit. Back at school, students are concurrently creating their own "cutouts" artwork based on this work of Matisse. "The Matisse exhibit was striking, with color and contrast," said Mrs. Williams. "It will help inspire students with their own cutout pieces." The zoo visit will be used in a future persuasive essay writing unit.
