It was a great weekend for former Springs School student and East Hampton senior Erik Engstrom. Erik and the East Hampton boys cross country team competed in the "Wave Mania Invitational" in Warwick, New York, on Saturday. The team finished third out of 16 teams. Erik won the "Varsity 2" race, finishing in 15:43.5 on the 3.09-mile course, an average of 5:04 minutes per mile. His time was the fastest of the day, and set a new East Hampton school record.

And, on Monday, the East Hampton High School boys and girls cross-country teams also turned out in force for the Great Bonac 5K  in Springs. The boys' team, which currently has a preseason ranking of 10th in New York State, finished in a pack of five, a couple of minutes behind the 5K’s winner, Gerard Connelly, 18, of Nesconset.

A stress fracture sidelined Engstrom during last spring’s track season, though his coach, Kevin Barry said “he’s very fit now” and is confident about his abilities for this year.

There are eight seniors on East Hampton’s team:  Engstrom, T.J. Paradiso, Eric Perez, Eric Sanchez, Nick Pucci, Jackson Rafferty, Jimmy Makrianes, and Kyle McKee.
