First Graders Create Balloon Rockets!

Students in first grade are studying Air and Weather as part of their science unit.  This week, in Science Lab, they learned how air can propel a balloon across a fishing line. "The propulsion provided by the air expelled from an inflated balloon is similar to the propulsion that moves jet airplanes and rockets," explained Mr. Knight.  "The gasses produced by the combustion of fuel in a rocket creates tremendous pressure in the body of the rocket.  The pressure pushes out with equal force in all directions."  Students also learned that the opening in the back of the rocket, the nozzle, allows the has to escape, so the pressure there is less than that directly opposite the opening.  Pressurized air in a balloon produces the same result as it escapes through the mouth of the balloon.  Students loved seeing the balloons propel across the floor!
