August 2017

Dear Springs School District Parents and Guardians,

As your new Superintendent, I welcome you to the start of the 2017-18 school year. Our school opens on Tuesday, September 5th.

In my two short months in our school community, I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you and your children and look forward to getting to know all of you in the coming months.

I hope to see you at Spirit Meet on September 11th.  I will be hosting my first “Coffee Hour with the Superintendent” immediately following Spirit Meet and encourage you to attend.  My door is always open to the families and community members of Springs.  Please look for monthly coffee hours to come. Also, the Welcome Back Barbecue, hosted by the Springs PTA will be held  on Friday, September 15th  from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Enjoy a night of games, food, and a movie! Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided by the PTA. Bring a potluck dish, refreshments, or dessert to share! We hope to see everyone there!

Please use these opportunities to introduce yourselves as together, we strengthen the ties between our school and community. Together we make a difference, is not only the Springs motto, but reflects my approach to leading your school and helping you and our staff provide an exceptional learning experience for all the children of Springs School. As your child’s first teacher, you are a valued partner in your child’s education.

Part of a positive educational experience begins with a safe and appropriate learning environment. I am happy to report that our septic system has been repaired. As we move forward, we will be exploring a bond proposal for a school expansion that would provide seven (7) new classrooms, which will include additional space for our art and music classes. The additional classrooms will finally enable us to place all our students in one building. Also included in the bond are (18) small instructions spaces, a new roof and windows, a gymnasium, a baseball field, improvements to our existing 2 soccer fields to make them regulation-sized, and a new nitrogen-reducing septic system.

As the new year begins, I would like to congratulate our teachers and students for their hard work in achieving increased scores in both the NYS English Language Arts and Math exams.

One of my personal goals is to achieve Blue Ribbon School recognition in the coming years. I believe anything is possible when we work together as parents, students, school and community. I hope to hear your thoughts about what is working effectively and what could be improved in our school.

The Board of Education and I have created a theme this year.  We are asking that our students share their experiences with their school in a brief essay titled “What Springs School means to me?” (past, present and future). Alumni, staff and community members are also welcome to participate. Each month several essays will be chosen to be read at that month’s  BOE meeting. At the first meeting essays from grade 8 students will be read. We will include each grade in the coming months until we  finish with essays written by our kindergarten class.

I wish you and your child an amazing school year. Please feel free to email me at dwinter@springsschool.org, stop by or call me at (631) 324-0144. Follow us on twitter @Dwintersprings for even more up-to-date information on Springs School. Remember, my door is always open.

All the best,

Deb Winter
