Fifth Graders Conduct Research at the Beach

Fifth graders took their learning to the beach last week. As part of the T.E.R.N. program (Teaching Environmental Responsibility Now) led by the Group for the East End, students visited White Sands beach in Amagansett, where they examined both the physical and biological properties of the beach by making observations and gathering data on weather, sand, seawater, and living organisms. Students learned about the variation in animals and plants native to the beaches, dunes and near-shore waters, including their adaptations for survival. After their scientific studies, students had some fun by participating in "beachcombing challenge" scavenger hunt.  

The T.E.R.N. program has been a part of Springs School for 26 years. Programs vary according to grade level, but all strive to teach children about their natural surroundings.  In addition to visiting the ocean beach, this year’s fifth graders will experience field trips to the local salt marsh, forest, and freshwater pond. In the coming months, they will also receive classroom lessons about Long Island’s geologic history, drinking water, taxonomy, and ecology
